about
Guess I can write a little story about this one... bear with me for a moment.
Normally whenever you record, you play to what is called a "click track", which is essentially a very loud and obnoxious metronome in your headphones that gets drilled into your brain so that you never ever get off time when recording. This prevents any speeding up or slowing down, and often serves as a count-in (typically 8 beats) before the song starts, so you know when to start playing if you are supposed to come in at the very beginning.
Now with this song I opted not to use a click track when recording the guitar part, which was recorded a day or two before the vocals, because I wanted it to feel a bit more free and less structured than the other tracks. It's the opening song, it's wordless, it's less than forty seconds long - it needed to run at its own pace.
There was one small problem, though: When we went in to record the vocals the following day, we realized we had no clue when to start singing. The vocals start at the same time the guitar does, and we had no click track to alert us as to when to begin. We tried in vain for several takes to get the timing right, but we all kept missing the mark, and although it was hilarious it was also seriously wasting time.
After awhile though I noticed something peculiar in the background of the guitar track, far off in the distance - a dog's bark. Our producer's dog, Mindy, to be exact. She was upstairs, and apparently the basement was less soundproof than we thought. She had barked a split second before I recorded the guitar part the other day, and it had made it's way into the track somehow. But hey! Now we had a cue to go off of, and for the rest of the session used Mindy's quiet bark (now turned up a bit in the final mix, because we all love pet sounds) as our jumping off point for recording the vocals.
So Mindy, if you have somehow gained cognitive thought and are reading this, thank you very much for your contribution to this album, and make sure Bobby gives you an extra treat for me.
